127th Infantry Regiment

  • Organized in April and May 1861 at Milwaukee and Madison from existing independent companies as the 1st and 2d Regiments, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, respectively
  • 1st Regiment mustered into Federal service 17 May 1861 at Milwaukee;
    mustered out of Federal service 22 August 1861 at Milwaukee
    Reorganized and mustered into Federal service 8-9 October 1861 at Milwaukee; mustered out of Federal service 13-14 October 1864 at Milwaukee
  • 2d Regiment mustered into Federal service 11 June 1861 at Madison; non-veterans mustered out of Federal service 2 July 1864 at Madison and veterans and recruits organized into a two-company battalion
    Redesignated 30 November 1864 as Companies G and H, 6th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry
    Mustered out of Federal service 14 July 1865 at Jeffersonville, Indiana
  • Reorganized 1866-1870 in the Wisconsin State Militia as independent companies
  • Independent companies reorganized and redesignated 5 August 1870 as the 1st Regiment
  • 1st Regiment disbanded in December 1875 and its elements reorganized as independent companies
  • Independent companies reorganized 1880-1881 as follows:
  • 1st Battalion organized 29 March 1880 from companies in southern Wisconsin with Headquarters at Janesville
  • 2d Battalion organized 19 February 1881 from companies in central Wisconsin with Headquarters at Oshkosh
  • 3d Battalion organized 19 May 1881 from companies in west-central Wisconsin with Headquarters at LaCrosse
  • 4th Battalion organized 26 May 1881 from companies in south-central Wisconsin with Headquarters at Madison; disbanded 25 April 1884
  • 1st and 2d Battalions expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 26 April 1882 as the 1st and 2d Infantry Regiments (3d Battalion expanded, reorganized, and redesignated 30 April 1883 as the 3d Infantry Regiment – hereafter separate lineage)
  • 1st Infantry Regiment mustered into Federal service 14 May 1898 at Milwaukee as the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and mustered out of Federal service 19 October 1898 at home stations; 2d Infantry Regiment mustered into Federal service 12 May 1898 at Madison as the 2d Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and mustered out of Federal service 11-21 November 1898 at home stations
  • Former 1st Infantry Regiment consolidated 10 June 1899 with former 4th Infantry Regiment (see ANNEX) and consolidated unit reorganized in the Wisconsin National Guard as the 1st Infantry Regiment with Headquarters at Milwaukee; former 2d Infantry Regiment concurrently reorganized in the Wisconsin National Guard with Headquarters at Appleton
  • 1st and 2d Infantry Regiments mustered into Federal service 30 June 1916 at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin; mustered out of Federal service 19 January and 28 February 1917, respectively, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois
  • 1st and 2d Infantry Regiments mustered into Federal service 15 July 1917 at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin; drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917
  • Consolidated, reorganized, and redesignated 27 September 1917 as the 127th Infantry and assigned to the 32d Division
  • Demobilized 18 May 1919 at Camp Grant, Illinois
  • Former 2d Infantry Regiment and elements of former 1st Infantry Regiment organized 1919-1920 in the Wisconsin National Guard as separate companies of infantry (remainder of former 1st Infantry Regiment – hereafter separate lineage)
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1921 as the 127th Infantry, with Headquarters at Oconto, and assigned to the 32d Division (later redesignated as the 32d Infantry Division)
  • (Location of Headquarters changed 31 January 1930 to Crandon)
  • Inducted into Federal service 15 October 1940 at home stations
  • Inactivated 28 February 1946 in Japan
  • Reorganized and Federally recognized 18 August 1949 with Headquarters at Waukesha
  • Reorganized 15 February 1959 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battle Groups, elements of the 32d Infantry Division
  • (1st, 2d, and 3d Battle Groups ordered into active Federal service 15 October 1961 at home stations; released 10 August 1962 from active Federal service and reverted to state control)
  • Reorganized 1 April 1963 to consist of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Battalions, elements of the 32d Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 30 December 1967 to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions, elements of the 32d Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 1 April 1971 to consist of the 1st Battalion and the 2d Battalion, an element of the 32d Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized 1 February 1980 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 32d Infantry Brigade
  • Withdrawn 1 February 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Reorganized 1 October 1997 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 34th Infantry Division
  • Reorganized 1 September 2003 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 32d Infantry Brigade
  • (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 6 June 2005 at home stations)
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 127th Infantry Regiment
  • (2d Battalion released from active Federal service 2 December 2006 and reverted to state control)
  • Reorganized 1 September 2008 to consist of the 2d Battalion, an element of the 32d Infantry Brigade Combat Team
  • (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 1 February 2009 at home stations; released from active Federal service 7 March 2010 and reverted to state control)
