  • Constituted 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army as the 38th Infantry
  • Organized 1 June 1917 at Syracuse, New York
  • Assigned 1 October 1917 to the 3d Division
  • (1st Battalion inactivated 1 October 1933 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; activated 1 May 1939 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma)
  • Relieved 16 October 1939 from assignment to the 3d Division and assigned to the 2d Division [later redesignated as the 2d Infantry Division]
  • Relieved 8 November 1957 from assignment to the 2d Infantry Division and reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
  • Withdrawn 28 August 1987 from the Combat Arms Regimental System, reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System, and transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 38th Infantry Regiment
  • Withdrawn 27 April 2006 from the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command
