36th Infantry Regiment Lineage

Constituted 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 36th Infantry

Organized 27 July 1916 at Brownsville, Texas

Assigned 5 July 1918 to the 12th Division

Relieved 31 January 1919 from assignment to the 12th Division

Inactivated 13 October 1921 at Fort Jay, New York

Assigned 24 March 1923 to the 9th Division

Relieved 1 August 1940 from assignment to the 9th Division

Activated 15 April 1941 at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, as the 36th Infantry (Armored) and assigned to the 3d Armored Division

Redesignated 1 January 1942 as the 36th Armored Infantry

Inactivated 10 November 1945 in Germany

Regiment broken up 7 July 1947 and its elements redesignated as elements of the 3d Armored Division as follows:

    Headquarters as Headquarters, Reserve Command, 3d Armored Division
    1st Battalion as the 36th Armored Infantry Battalion
    2d Battalion as the 37th Armored Infantry Battalion
    3d Battalion as the 13th Armored Infantry Battalion

Battalions activated 15 July 1947 at Fort Knox, Kentucky

(Company A, 36th Armored Infantry Battalion, reorganized and redesignated 15 February 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Rifle Battalion, 36th Infantry; concurrently relieved from assignment to the 3d Armored Division and assigned to the 1st Armored Division)

36th (less Company A), 37th, and 13th Armored Infantry Battalions relieved 1 October 1957 from assignment to the 3d Armored Division and consolidated to form the 36th Infantry, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System; former Headquarters, Reserve Command, 3d Armored Division, concurrently expanded and redesignated as Headquarters, 36th Infantry, and as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Combat Command C, 3d Armored Division (Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Combat Command C, 3d Armored Division--hereafter separate lineage)

36th Infantry withdrawn 16 June 1989 from the Combat Arms Regimental System, reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System, and transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command

Withdrawn 9 August 1991 from the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command

Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 36th Infantry Regiment
