  • Organized 8 July 1861 at Fort Trumbull, Connecticut
  • Redesignated 30 April 1862 as Company D, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry
  • Redesignated 21 September 1866 as Company D, 23d Infantry
  • (23d Infantry assigned 22 September 1917 to the 2d Division [later redesignated as the 2d Infantry Division])
  • Inactivated 20 June 1957 at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 2d Infantry Division; concurrently, redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battle Group, 23d Infantry
  • Activated 25 January 1963 at Fort Richardson, Alaska (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)
  • Assigned 20 May 1963 to the 172d Infantry Brigade
  • Reorganized and redesignated 1 July 1963 as the 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry
  • Relieved 14 January 1966 from assignment to the 172d Infantry Brigade and assigned to the 25th Infantry Division
  • Inactivated 5 June 1972 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii
  • Relieved 2 August 1972 from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division and assigned to the 172d Infantry Brigade; concurrently, activated at Fort Richardson, Alaska
  • Inactivated 6 January 1983 at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 172d Infantry Brigade
  • Assigned 21 January 1983 to the 9th Infantry Division and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington
  • Inactivated 28 September 1990 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and relieved from assignment to the 9th Infantry Division
  • Assigned 16 March 2004 to the 172d Infantry Brigade [later redesignated as the 172d Infantry Brigade Combat Team] and activated at Fort Richardson, Alaska
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment
  • Inactivated 16 December 2006 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 172d Infantry Brigade Combat Team
  • Assigned 17 April 2007 to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington
  • Relieved 22 July 2010 from assignment to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division and assigned to the 2d Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division
