- Organized and Federally recognized 7 February 1947 in the South Carolina National Guard as the 2d Battalion, 218th Infantry, an element of the 51st Infantry Division, with Headquarters at Rock Hill
- Converted and redesignated 1 April 1959 as the 2d Reconnaissance Squadron, 263d Armor, an element of the 51st Infantry Division
- Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1963 as the 2d Battalion, 263d Armor, and relieved from assignment to the 51st Infantry Division
- Assigned 1 January 1968 to the 30th Infantry Division; relieved 1 January 1974 from assignment to the 30th Infantry Division
- Converted and redesignated 1 October 1995 as the 178th Engineer Battalion
- Reorganized and redesignated 1 September 2008 as the 178th Engineer Battalion, to consist of the Headquarters and the Support Company (Companies A-C concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the 174th Engineer Company, the 1222d Engineer Company, and the 172d Engineer Platoon, respectively—hereafter separate lineages)
- Ordered into active Federal service 7 July 2012 at home stations; released from active Federal service 10 August 2013 and reverted to state control
