- Constituted 21 August 1978 in the Regular Army as Company C, 501st Aviation Battalion, an element of the 1st Armored Division, and activated in Germany
- Inactivated 16 November 1987 in Germany
- Relieved 16 September 1988 from assignment to the 1st Armored Division, withdrawn from the Regular Army, and allotted to the Army Reserve; concurrently redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 501st Aviation, and activated at Glenview, Illinois (organic elements constituted in the Regular Army and activated 16 October 1988 in Korea)
- Location of headquarters changed 15 February 1993 to Fort Sheridan, Illinois
- Battalion inactivated (less Companies A and B) 15 September 1995 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois; concurrently withdrawn from the Army Reserve and allotted to the Regular Army
- (Companies A and B inactivated 15 January 1996 in Korea)
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as 3d Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment
- Assigned 16 September 2011 to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division and activated at Fort Bliss, Texas
