- Constituted 22 January 1962 in the Regular Army as Company A, 501st Aviation Battalion, an element of the 1st Armored Division
- Activated 3 February 1962 at Fort Hood, Texas
- Inactivated 1 September 1966 in Vietnam
- Activated 21 August 1978 in Germany
- Inactivated 16 November 1987 in Germany
- Relieved 16 October 1988 from assignment to the 1st Armored Division; concurrently redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Aviation, and activated in Korea (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)
- Battalion inactivated 15 February 1996 in Korea
- Assigned 16 February 1997 to the 1st Armored Division and activated in Germany
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment
- Inactivated 15 November 2005 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Armored Division
- Assigned 16 September 2011 to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, and activated at Fort Bliss, Texas
