- Constituted 1 October 1987 in the Georgia and Louisiana Army National Guard as the 244th Aviation, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, and organized from existing units to consist of the 1st Battalion
- Reorganized 1 December 1987 to consist of the 1st Battalion and Company G
- Reorganized 1 September 1995 in the Louisiana Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion
- (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 7 December 2003 at home stations; released from active Federal service 1 March 2005 and reverted to state control)
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 244th Aviation Regiment
- Reorganized 1 September 2006 in the Louisiana and Florida Army National Guard to consist of the 1st Battalion
- (1st Battalion ordered into active Federal service 16 April 2008 at home stations; released from active Federal service 20 May 2009 and reverted to state control)
- Reorganized 8 February 2012 in the Louisiana and Florida Army National Guard to consist of the 1st and 2d Battalions
- (2d Battalion ordered into active Federal service 2 January 2013 at home stations)
