14th Cavalry Regiment

  • Constituted 2 February 1901 in the Regular Army as the 14th Cavalry
  • Organized 19 February 1901 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas
  • Assigned 15 August 1927 to the 2d Cavalry Division
  • Inactivated 15 July 1942 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and relieved from assignment to the 2d Cavalry Division; personnel and equipment transferred to the 14th Armored Regiment (see ANNEX)
  • Headquarters, Headquarters Troop and Service Troop, 14th Cavalry, redesignated 12 July 1943 as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 14th Cavalry Group, and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington
  • Reorganized and redesignated 21 December 1943 as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 14th Cavalry Group, Mechanized
  • (Remainder of the former 14th Cavalry disbanded 26 October 1944)
  • Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 14th Cavalry Group, Mechanized, converted and redesignated 1 May 1946 as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 14th Constabulary Regiment
  • Reorganized and redesignated 2 February 1948 as Headquarters and Headquarters and Service Troop, 14th Constabulary Regiment
  • Converted and redesignated 20 December 1948 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 14th Armored Cavalry (disbanded elements of the former 14th Cavalry concurrently reconstituted as elements of the 14th Armored Cavalry, and activated in Germany)
  • Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Company consolidated 8 January 1951 with the 14th Tank Battalion; concurrently, 3d Battalion consolidated with 711th Tank Battalion (see ANNEX); consolidated units designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 14th Armored Cavalry and 3d Battalion, 14th Armored Cavalry, respectively, and remained allotted to the Regular Army
  • (Battalions and companies redesignated 15 May 1960 as Squadrons and Troops)
  • Inactivated 17 May 1972 in Germany
  • Reorganized and redesignated 16 September 2000 as the 14th Cavalry, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System
  • Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 14th Cavalry Regiment
  • ANNEX
  • Constituted 11 July 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 14th Armored Regiment and assigned to the 9th Armored Division
  • Activated 15 July 1942 at Fort Riley, Kansas, with personnel and equipment from the 14th Cavalry
  • Regiment broken up 9 October 1943 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as follows:
  • Regiment (less the 3d Battalion, Reconnaissance, Maintenance and Service Companies, and Band) as the 14th Tank Battalion, an element of the 9th Armored Division
  • 3d Battalion as the 711th Tank Battalion and relieved from assignment to the 9th Armored Division
  • Reconnaissance Company as Company E, 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Mechanized -- hereafter separate lineage
  • Maintenance and Service Companies and Band disbanded
  • After 9 October 1943 the above units underwent changes as follows:
  • 14th Tank Battalion inactivated 13 October 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia
  • 711th Tank Battalion inactivated 21 January 1946 at Seattle, Washington
