- Redesignated 25 March 1949 as Company B, 5th Cavalry
- (5th Cavalry relieved 15 October 1957 from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division)
- Inactivated 15 November 1957 in Japan; concurrently redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2d Reconnaissance Squadron, 5th Cavalry
- Redesignated 19 June 1963 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry (organic elements concurrently constituted)
- Battalion assigned 1 August 1963 to the 1st Cavalry Division and activated in Korea
- Inactivated 31 July 1972 at Fort Hood, Texas
- Activated 20 June 1974 at Fort Hood, Texas
- Relieved 16 September 1986 from assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division and assigned to the 3d Armored Division
- Inactivated 16 December 1986 in Germany and relieved from assignment to the 3d Armored Division
- Assigned 16 January 1987 to the 1st Cavalry Division and activated at Fort Hood, Texas
- Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment
