THE AUTHOR

From 1947 to 1950 he was associate editor of the Cavalry Journal, and from 1950 to 1953, as editor of Armor Magazine, he assured that the mounted arm’s publication reflected the transition from horse to horsepower. From 1956 to his retirement in 1962 he served as a historian in the Office of the Chief of Military History; in 1963 he returned as a civilian historian. Before embarking upon this book, he compiled the annual reports of the Secretary of the Army and the annual Department of the Army Historical Summary. He served as the staff specialist on the frontier army and wrote the Indian Wars chapter of the Army’s historical volume American Military History.
