Foreword

This document is a continuation, under a new title, of the United States Army's long-standing series of periodic reports, one published with only minor modifications of frequency and continuity since 1822. Until 1949 it was the Secretary of War's report of stewardship. From 1949 to 1968 it served as the Secretary of the Army's report and appeared with those of the other service secretaries in the Annual Report of the Department of Defense.

In May 1972, the consolidated report was canceled by the Secretary of Defense. To preserve its traditional and valuable reference document, the Army has published three reports—1969, 1970, 1971—that were in suspense, and will continue publication on a current basis. Effective with the 1969 edition, the title was changed from Annual Report of the Secretary of the Army to Department of the Army Historical Summary. The report will be prepared and published by the Chief of Military History and will continue to appear on a fiscal year schedule.
