"After the initial explosion I realized I was on fire so I stop dropped and rolled and was still on fire so I jumped into a canal off of the Euphrates. After another HMMWV pulled up I made my way to the road where I assisted in getting the area secured as much as I could."

Specialist Alex Aguilar began his military career as administration specialist in the Army Reserves. Realizing that his true calling was in the infantry, he quickly transferred to Mississippi National Guard as an 11 Bravo (Infantrymen), and was assigned to A Company 1st Battalion 155th Infantry Brigade. On 8 May 2004 the 155th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) was alerted for deployment. During mobilization training at Camp Shelby Mississippi, Specialist Aguilar excelled in marksmanship and was designated as company marksmen (sniper). Operating in areas south of Baghdad, Specialist Aguilar performed routine foot patrols and over watch sniper missions. On 12 August 2004 while on a 3 man OP (Observation Post) the HMMWV (High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle) Specialist Aguilar was in came under attack by a VBIED (Vehicle Born Improvised Explosive Device). Although severely wounded Specialist Aguilar, took control of the situation and directed the remaining assets into a security perimeter. After the situation was under control Specialist Aguilar was airlifted back to the United States, and was treated at Ft. Sam Houston's Brooke Army Hospital. Specialist Aguilar is still recovering from his wounds, and is now working with the Mississippi Army National Guard full time with the hopes of securing a permanent position in the near future.
