Reorganized and redesignated 15 February 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 16th Infantry, and remained assigned to the 1st Infantry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)

Relieved 13 March 1959 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and assigned to the 8th Infantry Division

Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry

Relieved 25 April 1963 from assignment to the 8th Infantry Division and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division

Inactivated 15 May 1991 in Germany

Activated 16 July 1991 at Fort Riley, Kansas

Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment

Relieved 16 September 2009 from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division, and assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division
