2d BATTALION, 8th INFANTRY REGIMENT

Constituted 5 July 1838 in the Regular Army as Company B, 8th Infantry, and organized at Detroit, Michigan

Consolidated in May 1869 with Company B, 33d Infantry (see ANNEX), and consolidated unit designated as Company B, 8th Infantry

(8th Infantry assigned 17 December 1917 to the 8th Division; relieved 24 March 1923 from assignment to the 8th Division and assigned to the 4th Division [later redesignated as the 4th Infantry Division])

Inactivated 25 February 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina

Activated 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California

Inactivated 1 April 1957 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and relieved from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division

Redesignated 1 August 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battle Group, 8th Infantry, assigned to the 8th Infantry Division, and activated in Germany (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)

Relieved 1 January 1959 from assignment to the 8th Infantry Division and assigned to the 1st Infantry Division

Reorganized and redesignated 1 October 1963 as the 2d Battalion, 8th Infantry; concurrently relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division

Inactivated 13 September 1972 at Fort Carson, Colorado

Activated 1 August 1984 at Fort Carson, Colorado

Inactivated 15 December 1989 at Fort Carson, Colorado, and relieved from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division

Assigned 16 December 1995 to the 2d Armored Division and activated at Fort Hood, Texas

Relieved 16 January 1996 from assignment to the 2d Armored Division and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division

Relieved 16 December 2004 from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division and assigned to the 2d Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

Redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2d Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment

ANNEX

Constituted 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Company B, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry

Organized by March 1864 at Fort Adams, Rhode Island

Reorganized and redesignated 21 September 1866 as Company B, 33d Infantry

Consolidated in May 1869 with Company B, 8th Infantry, and consolidated unit designated as Company B, 8th Infantry
