Constituted 24 March 1942 in the Regular Army as the 2d Battalion, 334th Engineers

Activated 20 May 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana

Redesignated 20 July 1946 as the 2d Battalion, 334th Engineer Special Service Regiment

Inactivated 27 August 1946 in Belgium

Redesignated 14 October 1948 as the 980th Engineer Construction Battalion; concurrently withdrawn from allotment to the Regular Army and allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps

Activated 3 January 1949 with Headquarters at Austin, Texas

(Organized Reserve Corps redesignated 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve)

Redesignated 31 August 1953 as the 980th Engineer Battalion

(Location of Headquarters changed 1 April 1959 to Wichita Falls, Texas)

Ordered into active military service 15 October 1961 at home stations; released from active military service 9 August 1962 and reverted to reserve status

(Location of Headquarters changed 15 October 1990 to Austin, Texas)

Ordered into active military service 7 December 2003 at home stations; released from active military service 3 June 2005 and reverted to reserve status
