Case Study BibliographyOverviewIn 2000, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the U.S. Army Center of Military History (CMH) initiated a multi-year historical effort to examine the history of defense acquisition since 1945. Acquisition, for our purposes, is defined as the conceptualization, initiation, development, test, contracting, production, deployment, logistic support, modification, and disposal of weapons and other systems, supplies, or services (including construction) to satisfy DoD needs, intended for use in or in support of military missions. Case studies describing specific aspects of these subject areas are included in this bibliography. Given the enormous scope of the subject, the Defense Acquisition History Project team identified case studies as a valuable supplement to the archival sources that will form the foundation of the overall history. Case studies provide insights into the policy and decision-making processes that often cannot be found in official and other records. A case study inventory project — the basis of this reference guide — was undertaken with the hope of aiding the researcher. There are literally thousands of documents and special studies that could be included in a general bibliography of case study-related materials; this bibliography includes only published and unpublished studies. Among the case studies included herein are government publications, organizational and system historical studies prepared by military agencies and commands, civilian studies prepared by think-tanks and academics, and unpublished theses and dissertations written by graduate students of both military postgraduate schools and civilian universities. These works include a wide spectrum of analytical approaches and acquisition topics. This finding aid is the product of nearly eight months of data collection by Dr. Shannon A. Brown, with generous support provided by Dr. Todd Clark, the other members of the project team, and the defense acquisition and history communities. A total of 369 case studies are detailed in this publication. It should be emphasized that this work is not an exhaustive list of case studies that relate to acquisition in the DOD, but instead represents only the first-year survey effort of a multi-year project. Case study writing is an ongoing activity. In the coming years, members of the Defense Acquisition History Project will continue to seek out and catalog acquisition-related case studies and case study materials. Updates and revisions to this finding aid may be made available in subsequent years.
